As the great Ulysses made his way home from his travels, he had to sail past an island of Sirens, striking creatures in the shape of women who sang to draw sailors to the island shores. Mesmerized by their magical voices and lovely faces, the seamen would jump into the waters and swim towards them, only to be devoured. Ulysses wanted to appreciate their enchanting voices in safety and ordered his men to tie him to the mast so he could listen to the Sirens’ song without jumping from the boat to join them.
